Boilerplate

ArabyBuddy in one paragraph

Written to be used exactly as it is. Every claim in it is one we can stand behind today, which is why it names the seven varieties the app teaches and no more.

ArabyBuddy is a mobile app for learning the Arabic people actually speak. Alongside Modern Standard Arabic it teaches six dialects, Egyptian, Levantine, Gulf, Sudanese, Iraqi and Moroccan Darija, taking complete beginners from the alphabet to real conversations through short, playful lessons: flashcards, crosswords, dictation, and speaking practice that scores your pronunciation on your own device. A cast of original characters, led by Urayb the fennec fox and Rawi the lizard, carries the story from one lesson to the next. ArabyBuddy is available on iOS and Android with a 7-day free trial, and is made by Gadir Tech Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales.

“cheese”

One word, one letter, three readings. Egyptian turns ج into a hard g, and the Levantine ending softens from -a to -e.

  • Modern Standardجُبْنٌjubn
  • Egyptianجِبْنَةgibna
  • Levantineجِبْنَةْjibne

“milk”

Sometimes it is not the pronunciation that moves but the word. Modern Standard and Levantine both use حَلِيب, while Egyptian reaches for لَبَن instead.

  • Modern StandardحَلِيبٌHaleeb
  • Egyptianلَبَنْlaban
  • LevantineحَلِيبْHaleeb
